Confessions of a Designer - Quotes from the world of design (by Anneke Short )
All of these.
Might I add two of my personal faves?
“What. Pay you for a simple illustration? Can’t you do that, like, in between your other drawings?”
- Fuck you?
“I have a friend who has a friend who knows someone who would do this for free, you know?”
- Then let that person do it for you because I definitely won’t.
I know all of these painfully well. :T Design work. Lulz.
It’s kinda strange. If people think they know what they want for a website design or whatever and doesn’t let the designer who they hired do their job…then why are they hiring the designer in the first place?
I guess it’s the problem with creative jobs and services and the lack of appreciation. I mean you don’t tell an electrician how to do their job… I guess everyone fancies themselves a designer so those people who spend four years getting a uni degree should just be the robots that put it together.
Tani’s rambling again oops.

Today I felt very passionate about design in my class.
So much so that I had to refrain myself from leaping for my tutor’s jugular when he asked us if we thought that design’s purpose was purely for monetary gain.
He was making an example and asking us what we thought it meant, so I knew he didn’t actually think design is for that purpose.
But even the merest suggestion of it, those words made me want to rip someone’s throat out with my teeth.
And then I realise. Ah. Yes. I am a designer after all.
And possibly just a bit nuts.
Just a bit.

holy FUCK
Man, this is exactly the kind of stuff I’m talking about when I mention value range! The Witch Doctor before and after page is a really good example of the importance of starting with a dark value and working up. The “before” is a pretty common result of working light to dark, or starting with a value that is too close to the middle of the value range. Everything looks kind of washed out, even when working with saturated colors, and lacks volume.
This is an amazing reference overall, gonna pour over the full PDF when I have a minute.
oooh this is really helpful!! i think i’ll make some minor coloring changes according to this, i think it’ll help a lot

AmoeBAND became a 2012 IDEA Award Finalist by innovating every possible aspect of the plaster (band aid).
The design revisions were:
- Strategic cut-outs shape to fit fingers in such a way that it is easy to bend them and not disrupt the bandage.
- An intelligent dressing material allows you to regularly check wounds from the outside, without upsetting the healing process.“According to research, the when an infection of a wound is detected, the pH value is between 6.5 and 8.5. AmoeBAND’s indicator cross turns purple, alerting the user needs to change it immediately.”
- Since the bandage material used exudes a leather-like feel, availability in different skin-tones helps it blend in, without overly highlighting the injury.
- The packaging has been redesigned to a matchbox style and includes Braille instructions.

Krzywy Domek (Crooked House) shopping center in Sopot, Poland
Designed by Szotyńscy & Zaleski, the multipurpose building boasts a unique look that was inspired by the fairy tale illustrations of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg. Like Jantzen’s imagined works, this venue has a cartoonish appeal. It looks like an animated house, bouncing in place to a jolly tune. There’s a jovial liveliness to the place that seems very inviting.
